Barbados Cherry Care Malpighia glabra

Barbados Cherry Bonsai Care

Botanical Name: Malpighia

Family: Malpighiaceae

Indoor Bonsai?
Will Tolerate Low Light Conditions. Great Indoor Bonsai

Zone: 9b-11

Whats My Zone?

Background: This delightful tropical bonsai cherry tree produces dense clusters of pink to deeprose flowers and edible berries which turn bright red and resemble cherries. There are over 800 species of Malpighiaceae trees and shrubs that grow in the tropics of America and South Africa but mostly in Mexico, Central America and the West Indies.

Features: Most are grown as ornamentals or for their edible fruit but some of them yield narcotics as in the Amazon. The fruit of Barbado Cherry Tree is very high in Vitamin C. A number of characteristics of some species of this plant make it an ideal choice for a small size bonsai. The small green leaves vary in shape from oval to holly, rough bark and a root system that is naturally exposed are a few of the reasons.

Soil Requirements : Well draining soil. Malpighia seem to flower and fruit better when some organic material is added.

Fertilization/ p.H: The Barbados Cherry plant is a heavy feeder during the spring and summer. For optimum bloom, using a dilute application daily or a full application of fertilizer weekly is a good idea. Alternate between a super phosphate and a balanced 20-20-20 with minors is a plus. Watch for yellowing leaves, if this occurs an application of chelated iron will take care of it. Using an organic fertilizer may be preferred. pH 6.0 - 7.5. Use a balanced plant food such as BonsaiPro diluted to 1/2 strenghth weekly or 12-10-10 slow release granules during the growing season and a slow release type 2-10-10 over the winter as directed.

Styles / Pruning / Training: Wiring can be used but care should be taken as the growth is fairly brittle. Clip and grow is very important with this plant. If branches are allowed to get too long, they will drop leaves at the back and have leggy bare growth. If this occurs, clip back to the last 2 leaves, it will break back from this, and you can continue to clip back as the new growth appears. The Barbados Cherry makes a great fruiting bonsai tree.

Light / Water Requirements: Tolerant of any sun position, full sun is best for small leaves, bloom and fruit however caution should be taken and the tree should be protected from full sun in the hottest months. Malpighia glabra do not like to stay wet. Water frequently, but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Propagation: Seed and cuttings. Take soft wood cuttings in April, place cuttings in compost with bottom heat 70-77 degrees F. ****M. glabra can be air-layered.***

Repotting Special Instructions: Only repot when night temperatures are a minimum of low to mid 60's F. Repotting can be done anytime during the summer.

Insects and Diseases: Aphids, scales and mites are rare but may occur. Mainly free but prune to allow light and air into the center of tree, also allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.

Temperature Requirements: Protect (bring indoors) when temperatures threaten to drop below 45 degrees F. The Barbados Cherry trees do not like to be very cold.

Caring For Barbados Cherry Trees is not Difficult And They Make Wonderful Fruiting Bonsai Trees. Enjoy!
