repot

Q. WHEN SHOULD I REPOT MY BONSAI PLANT OR TREE?

A bonsai should be able to live in it its pot for about 1 -2 years, most potting mixes begin to break down after that amount of time. Do some research on the appropriate time of year to repot your bonsai. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY REPOT A BONSAI, INCLUDING TRIMMING THE ROOTS, BEFORE YOU UNDERTAKE THIS PROJECT.

See Our Page On How To Repot A Bonsai.

Q. HOW DO I KNOW WHEN TO WATER MY BONSAI PLANT OR TREE?

A. YOU WATER A BONSAI WHEN A BONSAI NEEDS WATER !

When you first start out with your bonsai you have to get to know it. You have to adjust your watering schedule to the plants water needs. Watering a bonsai is determined by the type of plant, the type of soil, the size of the pot, and if it is kept indoors or in full sun. Give your bonsai a good deep soak at least once a week during the summer. Use a wooden chopstick as a dip-stick, or stick your finger down into the soil about half way. We recommend to invest in a water meter. Make sure you are checking the soil deep inside the rootball. Some bonsai may suffer if their roots are kept too dry for too long , others prefer to dry for a couple of days between waterings. Yellow leaves could be a sign of problems other than watering. Please research your type of bonsai on our bonsai care page to find the information you need.

Q. HOW OLD IS MY TREE?

A. The answer will depend on who is selling the tree! A reputable seller will give you their best estimate. Some seedlings are grown as bonsai stock, some pre-bonsai are collected and some are imported. Most nurseries will have a record of the age of their trees. Buyer Beware! Once the trees leave the nurseries it is up to the retailer to correctly label their ages.

PLEASE DON'T CUT OFF A BRANCH TO COUNT THE RINGS !!!

The age of our trees are always conveyed in our listings to the best of our ability. Our bonsai and pre-bonsai are slow-grown outdoors in Florida, collected specimens or imports. We will not sell hot-housed (a fast forced growth technique) merchandise.
