Shohin Chinese Elm Bonsai Tree
Shohin Chinese Elm Bonsai in Winter.

Features: The bark is mottled grey with reddish brown and cream highlites when it is mature. The leaves of the Chinese Elm are small, dark green and have saw-tooth edges. The Chinese Elm can be semi-deciduous or deciduous depending upon which part of the world it is growing. When subjected to winter weather it will lose all of its leaves, if protected may only lose some of the leaves. It is normal to get some yellow leaves just before it grows new ones.

Fertilizer/ph Fertilization/ p.H: The Chinese Elm will at times expel minerals and chemicals such as chlorine from the trunk. You can brush away the buildup or wash it off. Using rain-water or water which has been allowed to evaporate the chemicals out is best and will usually stop this from happening. . Use a balanced plant food such as BonsaiPro diluted to 1/2 strenghth weekly or 10-10-10 slow release granuals during the growing season and a slow release type 2-10-10 over the winter as directed.

Bonsai PruningStyles / Pruning / Training: The Chinese Elm is suitable for many styles. Imports are known for their 'S' shaped trunks. This tree can be pruned back hard and will respond with lots of new growth. The Elm should be trimmed in early spring to keep them in shape. Wire in early spring but use caution as new sprouts grow and thicken quickly.

Bonsai Lighting Light / Water requirements: If you wish to keep your elm indoors you must give it as much sunlight as possible. Place the tree in front of a south facing window, east or west being second and third choices. Outdoors the Chinese Elm can take full sun, protected from the full mid-day summer sun when possible.

Chinese Elms like to have their roots slightly moist, too much water and the leaves will turn yellow and fall off. Chinese elms will drop a few yellow leaves when new buds are coming in, don't mistake this as a need for water and over-water your tree. Don't water in full sun, the cool water touching the warm roots can shock your plant. Take caution when moving your plant from one location to another, try to acclimate your tree to new conditions whenever possible. Water heavily laden with chemicals can cause the tree to expel the chemicals and minerals through the base of the trunk. Rain water or water which has been allowed to evaporate the chemicals out is best.

PropagationPropagation: Chinese Elms can be grown from seeds, cuttings or by air layering.

Bonsai Pot Repotting Special Instructions: It is advised to repot your tree every 2 - 3 years. Don't forget to trim the roots, however never remove more than one-third of the rootball and soil. Use a well draining soil mix.

animated bug Insects and Diseases:Chinese Elms can be a host to several insects which can harm your tree. Common pests can include aphids, scale and mealy bugs.

therm Temperature Requirements: Protect roots from freezing, heat does not seem to be a problem, however you may want to protect above 90 degrees f. A humidity tray is recommended for indoor bonsai. See Indoor Bonsai Care for more info on keeping them inside.
