Divi-Divi

Botanical Name: Caesalpinia coriaria

Family: Lefuminosae / Fabaceae

Zone: 10 - 11

Whats My Zone?

Background History: Originating from the West Indies, Mexico and Central America

Features: This tree is a very slow grower. small feathery compound leaves are copper colored when first breaking out, change to bright green, and then darker green. The Divi-Divi trunk is corky with a grayish bark. These are popular for bonsai if you can find a nice trunk. White or yellow fragrant flowers and flat 'S' shaped seed pods.

Soil Requirements : Well draining soil.

Lighting:Prefers morning sun, can handle full sun but should be protected from the hottest sun of the day.

Water Requirements: The Divi-Divi does not like wet feet. This tree should be potted in quick draining soil and watered frequently. The Divi-Divi will tolerate some dry conditions.

Temperature requirements: Protect below 40 degrees F.

Styles / Pruning / Training: Suitable for all styles. Top and roots should be pruned at the same time but the foliage can be trimmed more severely than the roots. Prune the roots over several repottings. Wiring should be done with care as the branches are somewhat brittle. Clip and grow is the best method of pruning/training. You can defoliate the Divi Divi at least twice during the growing season to encourage smaller leaves and fuller foliage.

Propagation: Propagate through seeds or cuttings.

Repotting Special Instructions: Repot in late spring removing a small amount of roots at a time, repotting can continue through the summer. Repot only when night temperatures are a minimum of mid 60's F.

Salt tolerance: Low

Insects and Diseases: Resistant to most pests.
