How To Make Uros in Bonsai Trees

Uros are deliberate holes or gouges cut into trees to add character and appearance
of old age. They can be useful when you need to remove a large branch and don't
want to wait years for the scar to heal. This tutorial will show you how to
create uros in bonsai.

Tamarind Pre Bonsai

My first subject will be this Tamarind pre bonsai which needs some help. A large
knob was left when the primary leader trunk was removed.

Knob on tamarind

This large knob needs to go so the taper of the trunk can be made more realistic.

Cutting knob with branch cutters

I will start with my concave branch cutters, taking off a little at a time until I get it
nearly flush with the trunk.

Partially completed uro

This is how it looked when I was finished with the first step.

Cutting a Uro with rotory tool

Next I am using a rotory tool and carefully cutting in about 1/4" while
leaving the outer ring in tact (see picture below) to create the sense of depth.

1/8" Ball Head Cutter

I am using a 1/8" ball head cutter on my rotory tool which makes a nice
rounded shaped hole.

Finished Uro in Tamarind

The finished uro. I do not seal the wound, instead I want nature to take it's
course and begin healing naturally. If you wish to seal it then use a white
wood glue such as Elmers which will dry clear and form a waterproof barrier.

Old Uro in Tamarind Bonsai

Over time the uro will heal over and produce a nice knothole in the trunk.

Carving A Uro cave in bonsai

Here is a similar process using a wood carving tool to form
a cave in the base of a Eugenia bonsai.
