Neea Buxifolia Care

Neea Buxifolia Bonsai Tree

Botanical Name: Neea buxifolia

Family: Nyctaginaceae

Full Sun is recommended except during intense summers

Zone:10 - 11

Whats My Zone?

Background: The tiny leaves of the Neea make it a perfect choice for bonsai. A favorite bonsai subject in Puerto Rico, the Neea can actually grow as large as 15 feet in its native environment. A wonderful speciman for a miniature size bonsai.

Features: New shoots are reddish in color and will grow out in all directions, a pattern similar to the Ilex and this plant can be trained in much the same way. The Neea produces small, yellow flowers resembling hanging bells and also produces red berries.

Fertilization/ p.H: The Neea is NOT a heavy feeder. Fertilize at six month intervals using a balanced fertilizer including iron and calcium. Recommended p.H. is 5.5.

Styles / Pruning / Training: Any style , wiring can be used effectively to train however care must be used as the Neea is a fast grower. Wire when the branches are young and still soft, older wood becomes more brittle. Clip and grow is the recommended training method. The Neea will respond well to both top and root pruning. Do not root prune until necessary as the Neea prefers to be slightly root bound and this enhances flowering.

Light / Water requirements: The Neea appreciates lots of sunlight, however during intense summers in southern areas the Neea should be given some protection. Use a well draining soil and keep the soil moist but not soggy, the Neea won't tolerate wet feet.

Propagation: Propagation can be accomplished by several means such as branch cuttings, air-layering, and seeding. If you are in the Neeas' native environment - Puerto Rico - collecting may be an option.

Repotting Special Instructions: Repot only when the minimum night temperatures are in the high 60's. Repot yearly when young, older trees can be repotted every few years. Neea prefer to be slightly root bound and will produce more flowers and berries. Pot your Neea with a soil mix which will suit your watering capabilities - Neea like their soil to be moist but not soggy.

Insects and Diseases: No major issues are noted besides the average garden pests, watch for signs of mealy bugs, aphids and scale.
