Whats My Zone? |
Background: Native to eastern Asia, various types can be found throughout Florida used in landscape and hedge due to its dense, evergreen growth. Many varieties are sold in nursersies and a number are suitable for bonsai.
Features: Most species produce flowers in the Spring, followed by black fruit which will remain on the plant most of the year. The flowers produced are small, white and frangrant. Privets are considered fast growers.
Soil Requirements : Well draining soil to prevent problems, however the Privet is not very particular.
Fertilization/ p.H: Use a balanced fertilizer monthly during the growing season. 6.0 7.5 pH |
Styles / Pruning / Training: Privet is suitable for almost any style. Beginning the onset of the growing season the Privet can take severe root and branch pruning. DO NOT PRUNE EXCEPT DURING THE GROWING SEASON. Do not make concave cuts but rather make flush cuts or leave a small amount for die-back especially near or on the trunk. Wounds are slow to heal and it is recommended you close the wounds with a cut paste or sealant. For training, the young growth is tender so wire gently, once branches are established, clip and grow after spring blooming. Privet is a fast grower, so continue to clip during the growing season. Clip leaves back to two. Carving can be done only during the growing season and care should be taken because the bark surrounding the carved area has a tendency to loosen from the tree and could cause more die back than anticipated or desired.
Light / Water requirements: The Privet enjoys being outside from partial shade to full sun. The Privet likes to be watered frequently but does not like wet feet. Make sure to use a quick draining soil to prevent root rot so you can water often.
Propagation: Seedlings can be collected and are a good choice for propagating. Nice specimens can be collected.
Repotting Special Instructions: Repotting can begin earlier in the season than most plants, minimum night temperatures should be in the mid to high 50's.
Insects and Diseases: Use preventative measures against scales, white-flies, sooty mold, mushroom root-rot.
Temperature Requirements: Protect below 40 degrees F.
