Chinese Sweet Plum Bonsai Sageretia Theezans Care

Sageretia theezans chinese sweet plum

Botanical Name: (Sageretia Theezans)(thea)

Family: Rhamnaceae

Indoor Bonsai?
Will Tolerate Low Light Conditions. Great Indoor Bonsai

Zone: 8-10

Whats My Zone?

Background: Originating from Central and Southern Asia and the warmer regions of North America this tree requires some cold protection.

Features: A rough brown bark peels leaving a trunk with character. Evergreen leaves are small and shiny and reduce easily. Produces white flowers in winter which produce dark bluish fruit.

Fertilization/ p.H: pH is preferred at 5.5. This plant is an acid lover so many people add some peat to the potting soil and fertilize often with fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Use a balanced plant food such as BonsaiPro diluted to 1/2 strenghth weekly or 12-10-10 slow release granuals during the growing season and a slow release type 2-10-10 over the winter as directed.

Styles / Pruning / Training: Suitable for all styles. Root pruning should be done with care, removing only a small amount of roots at a time. Wiring is not necessary as this tree will respond well to the clip and grow method. This tree back-buds well. Trimming the foliage regularly is necessary during the heavy growing season to maintain the trees shape but do not prune during the winter months if you want flowers as they are forming on old growth.

Light / Water requirements: Full to filitered sunlight. Often used as an indoor bonsai but should be allowed to vacation outside when weather permits. Must have bright light if kept indoors. Protect from the hottest sun of the day.Keep the soil moist but not wet, use a well draining soil and water often but do not allow the pot to stand in water. If this plant dries out completely it will most likely die.

Don't water in full sun, the cool water touching the warm roots can shock your plant. Take caution when moving your plant from one location to another, try to acclimate your tree to new conditions whenever possible. Water heavily laden with chemicals can cause the tree to expel the chemicals and minerals through the base of the trunk. Rain water or water which has been allowed to evaperate the chemicals out is best.

Propagation: Grows easily from cuttings during spring or summer or from seeds anytime.

Repotting Special Instructions: Repotting should only be attempted when minimum night temperatures are in the low to mid 60's F. It is recommended to allow the plant to become root bound.

Salt tolerance: None

Insects and Diseases:The rough, peeling bark can attract pests. Occasionally spritz with a fungicide as a preventative especially if you are misting or have high humidity.

Temperature Requirements: Protect below 40 degrees f. If not protected or the tree encounters temps below 40, it will most likely defoliate (lose most or all leaves) but if pampered should recover.
